Bruce Hughes grew up in Austin, Texas, and has been ubiquitous in the musical mecca since the 80’s. Bassist, singer, guitarslinger, sideman, producer, session cat, ringleader … you name it – he’s been doing it.
A formative member of Austin bands Poi Dog Pondering, Ugly Americans, and the Scabs, he continues to be one of the town’s most visible and versatile musicians. You can catch him playing regularly around town and around the country with The Resentments, Bob Schneider, Johnny Nicholas, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Poi Dog Pondering, Fastball and Sly Curtis. Bruce was voted Bass Player of the Year in both the 2008 and 2015 Austin Music Awards, and has been the musical director of the Texas Songwriter Hall of Fame since 2013.
Bruce joined Cracker on their ’93-’94 US Kerosene Hat tour, and has been a part of Jason Mraz’s Superband since his ’08-’09 worldwide tour for We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. Check out Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess – (Live on Earth) DVD. It’s radical!
Bruce likes to help people make records – take a listen to projects for Johnny Nicholas, The Resentments, The Scabs, Matt the Electrician, Poi Dog Pondering, Geoff Muldaur and the Texas Sheiks, and U.K.’s Jonathan Whiskerd.
Bruce’s solo work includes Bluebird (2006), shorty (2008), BHANA (2010) and Trap Door (2013). Rumors of new releases for 2021 and beyond have been confirmed.
