shorty

I started collecting these short burst snapshots and fever dreams and lullabies, trying to get in and out in under 3 minutes, writing and recording in hotel rooms and backstages while on tour, and at the home studio H.I.T.G. I put about 30 in a pile and headed out to the country south of Austin, to Aerie Studio, to shake them up with Mark Addison in January of ’07. On the day we began, a winter storm hit and turned into a week long ice event, and as we were locked down and studio bound, we let madness reign.

Pulling grimy tracks off of demos, we rebuilt each piece out of mapmaker loups and rearview mirrors, dreamcatcher hoops and windmill gears, seaglass kaleidoscopes and kodachrome strips. Day turned into night turned into day. The fantastic became frequency and spirits were summoned, demons were exorcised, fabric was woven.

Once the ice melted and we had a rest, we invited a few of our favorite batteurs to hammer up walls and keep the elements in, and found time to mix it all together later in the year. A curious collection indeed, shorty...
