TRAP DOOR

Bruce’s 3rd solo record is a pared-down powerhouse. With its effortless melodies and light arrangements, Trap Door is essential Bruce; not a word or note is wasted in a record that gives the listener a glimpse into the inner landscape of an extraordinary musician.

Sometimes light, sometimes surprisingly vulnerable, the songs on this record tell stories of love lost, love found, love misplaced, and best of all, love for his fellow humans.

Bruce’s natural optimism and uncanny gift of combining longing with lightness shines through from start to finish. The opening tracks of “Days are Beautiful” and “Baby I Do” are straightforward and sexy, and get you in the groove with that trademark Bruce Hughes funk.

Hughes is a master lyricist with a voice that can make even the strongest knees weaken, even the hardest hearts melt. Songs like “A Girl Who Reads” and the final song, “Quiet,” reveal an introspective, vulnerable side of someone who can also rock your socks off using nothing more than an acoustic guitar and a voice that carries the power of love.

Trap Door proves that more is not always better. Sometimes leaving the listener wanting more is the best gift of all.
